Overview

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is an assisted reproductive treatment in which eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are monitored and one or more suitable embryos may later be transferred into the uterus. IVF is one of several fertility treatment options and is recommended only after proper assessment.

Who may need IVF?

When is IVF considered?

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
  • Male-factor infertility where assisted fertilisation may improve the chance of conception.
  • Reduced ovarian reserve or age-related fertility decline.
  • Endometriosis affecting fertility.
  • Repeated failure of simpler fertility treatments.
  • Unexplained infertility after appropriate evaluation.
  • Need for fertility preservation or selected genetic pathways.
Fertility Evaluation

What is checked before starting IVF?

Female evaluation

  • Menstrual and fertility history.
  • Ultrasound assessment.
  • Ovarian reserve testing where appropriate.
  • Hormonal investigations.
  • Uterine and tubal assessment when indicated.

Male evaluation

  • Semen analysis.
  • Medical and reproductive history.
  • Further testing if the semen report is significantly abnormal.
  • Discussion of IVF versus ICSI where appropriate.
Treatment Options

IVF is one part of fertility care

Ovulation Induction

Medicines may be used to support ovulation in selected patients.

IUI

Prepared sperm is placed inside the uterus around ovulation in suitable cases.

IVF

Eggs and sperm are brought together in the laboratory before embryo transfer.

ICSI

A single sperm is injected into an egg when indicated, often for male-factor infertility or previous fertilisation issues.

Frozen Embryo Transfer

Previously frozen embryos may be transferred in a later prepared cycle.

Fertility Preservation

Egg or embryo freezing may be considered in selected situations.

How IVF Is Done

Your IVF treatment journey

01
Cycle planning

The fertility team reviews investigations and selects a stimulation protocol.

02
Ovarian stimulation

Hormonal injections are used for several days to encourage multiple follicles to grow.

03
Monitoring

Ultrasound and, when required, blood tests are used to monitor follicle development.

04
Egg retrieval

Eggs are collected through a short ultrasound-guided procedure, usually with sedation or anaesthesia.

05
Fertilisation & embryo culture

Eggs are fertilised with sperm by IVF or ICSI and embryos are monitored in the laboratory.

06
Embryo transfer

A selected embryo may be transferred into the uterus in a fresh or later frozen cycle.

07
Pregnancy test

A blood pregnancy test is performed after the interval advised by the fertility team.

Preparation

Before starting an IVF cycle

  • Complete fertility evaluation for both partners where relevant.
  • Review existing medicines and chronic health conditions.
  • Discuss smoking, alcohol, weight and lifestyle factors that may affect fertility or pregnancy.
  • Review previous fertility treatment records.
  • Understand the medication schedule and monitoring visits.
  • Discuss embryo number, freezing, consent and storage policies before treatment.

IVF protocols are individualised. Do not compare medication doses or number of injections with another patient's cycle.

Egg Retrieval

What happens during egg collection?

Egg retrieval is generally performed after a trigger injection has been timed according to follicle development. Under ultrasound guidance, a fine needle is passed through the vaginal wall to collect fluid from the follicles. Sedation or short anaesthesia is commonly used, and the patient is observed for a short period afterward.

Embryo Transfer

What happens during embryo transfer?

Embryo transfer is usually a brief procedure in which a thin catheter is passed through the cervix into the uterus and the selected embryo is gently deposited. It usually does not require general anaesthesia, although individual circumstances vary.

Approximate Timeline

How long does an IVF cycle take?

Stimulation phase

Ovarian stimulation commonly lasts around 8–14 days, depending on the protocol and ovarian response.

Total treatment pathway

From cycle preparation through egg retrieval and embryo transfer, treatment may take several weeks. Frozen embryo transfer can occur in a later cycle.

Success Factors

What affects IVF success?

  • Female age.
  • Ovarian reserve and egg quality.
  • Sperm quality.
  • Embryo quality.
  • Uterine factors.
  • Underlying fertility diagnosis.
  • Previous treatment history.
  • Laboratory and clinical factors.

IVF success cannot be guaranteed, and published success rates should always be interpreted in the context of age group, diagnosis and whether rates refer to pregnancy, clinical pregnancy or live birth.

Recovery

Recovery during an IVF cycle

After egg retrieval

Mild cramping, bloating or spotting may occur. Most patients resume light activity quickly, but strenuous exercise may be restricted temporarily.

After embryo transfer

Routine gentle activity is usually acceptable unless the fertility team advises otherwise. Strict bed rest is generally not required for most patients.

Lifestyle & Activity

During fertility treatment

  • Take medicines exactly as prescribed.
  • Attend monitoring visits on the scheduled dates.
  • Maintain a balanced diet and hydration.
  • Avoid smoking and recreational drugs.
  • Ask the fertility team before starting new supplements or medicines.
  • Seek advice if you develop severe bloating, breathlessness, significant pain or reduced urine output.
Possible Risks

What risks should patients understand?

Possible risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, bleeding or infection after egg retrieval, cycle cancellation, failure of fertilisation or embryo development, ectopic pregnancy, multiple pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred, and emotional or financial stress. The risk profile depends on age, ovarian response, treatment protocol and individual health.

Approximate Cost

Shared after clinical evaluation

Final cost depends on stimulation medicines, scans, blood tests, IVF or ICSI, embryology, embryo freezing, storage, additional procedures and whether more than one cycle is required.
